Jamie shows his approval after an Elias power play goal against the Sens. Erik Karlsson was first to break the deadlock in the opening period as the Senators went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead. Elias tied up the affair in the second period on the power play, notching his fifth goal of the season. Kovalchuk racked up his seventh assist and Brodeur was credited with the rare goalie assist, his first of the year.
Milan Michalek and Jarkko Rutuu then scored consecutive goals for Ottawa in quick succession. The Devils once again found themselves on the power play and Zubrus unleashed a cannon-shot to beat Sens' goalie Pascal Leclaire. New Jersey kept up their white-hot form with the man advantage, converting on five of nine of their last nine chances. It was Zubrus' fourth of the campaign as Zajac and Kovalchuk picked up their ninth and eighth helpers respectively.
Late in the third period, the Devils appeared to have leveled the score but the goal was disallowed as David Clarkson was ruled to have kicked in the puck. Video evidence showed no distinct kicking motion and MSG Plus' crew of Doc Emrick and Chico Resch admitted that they didn't see anything that made the effort illegitimate. Neither team could find the back of the net afterward as the Senators held their lead of 3-2.
Clarkson himself gave his view on referee Brad Watson's call, "I thought it had to be a kicking motion. I guess he said the NHL reviewed it and made that call, was his answer to us. He had to call it because it did go off my skate when I shot it. I'm not sure. That's just the way it's been for us this year. Can't get a break."
The Devils returned home this past Saturday to a sold-out Prudential Center to battle with the Western Conference-leading Detroit Red Wings. Two shots early into the first period eluded the usually assured Brodeur as the Wings jumped out to a 2-0 lead via Tomas Holmstrom and Daniel Cleary.
Henrik Zetterberg was next to beat Brodeur during the second period before Elias kept New Jersey's power play rolling by cutting the deficit to 3-1 in the third period. It was Elias' sixth goal of the season as Zajac and Kovalchuk collected the assists, their tenth and ninth respectively. Pavel Datsyuk later put the game out of reach at 4-1 by scoring the final tally of the contest as the Devils' slump continued.
Strangely, New Jersey's special teams have been firing on all cylinders but the team has made a poor habit of letting their play tail off during even-strength. "We tried to stay positive there, worked hard, had a lot of good opportunities, a lot of good looks on the power plays, at certain times 5-on-5, we just couldn't put the puck in again," Elias said post-game.
Zajac called for better team responsibility, "It's no one's fault besides the players here. We're all part of it. We've put ourselves in this situation, it's going to take all the players to get out of it. We have to find a way. We have to come to the rink and want to get better and want to improve and find ways to win."
29 games complete, the Devils find themselves 4th place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 8-19-2. Patrik Elias is New Jersey's overall points leader at 19 and is also tops the team with 13 assists. Jason Arnott is ahead in the Devils' goal-scoring lead with 9. Martin Brodeur and Johan Hedberg each have recorded 4 victories in net. Brodeur's carries the team lead in goals against average of 2.83, while Hedberg is ahead in save percentage at 90.5%.
16-year veteran Brian Rolston was placed on waivers Tuesday and is expected to go unclaimed by other NHL clubs. Stephen Gionta, Oliver Magnan, Matt Corrente, Alexander Vasyunov and Mike McKenna have all been assigned to AHL affiliate Albany. Center Tim Sestito and defensive pair Dan Kelly and Harry Young received call-ups to the New Jersey Devils.
After taking another hit which sent Langenbrunner head first into the boards, Jamie was able to bounce back and not miss any time. On the injury front, Jamie Langenbrunner will not miss any time due after suffering a head-first collision against Detroit on Saturday. Anssi Salmela has been cleared to return to game action and will likely make his season debut on Wednesday against Phoenix. Matt Taormina has begun skating and is close to a return. Jacob Josefson has begun off-ice workouts but is yet to receive clearing to participate in on-ice drills. Mark Fraser is still recovering on the injury reserve from a broken hand.
Zach Parise and Bryce Salvador remain on the long-term IR. Parise could make his return in February from knee surgery but timetable has not been set for Salvador who is recovering from post-concussion syndrome.
The Devils continue their homestand against the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday and Nashville Predators on Friday before a short road-trip to visit the Atlanta Thrashers on Saturday and the Washington Capitals next Tuesday. |
